pear-smoothie-recipe-fibre

Raise your glass to fibre! Dietary fibre plays an important role in maintaining healthy weight and lowering your risk of diabetes, heart disease and other non-communicable diseases. Fibre is also important to keep you gut bacteria healthy, which supports your immune system. All the more reason to drink a smoothie that’s high in fibre.

This smoothie contains both soluble and insoluble fibre. Soluble fibre dissolves in water and helps lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels. Insoluble fibre doesn’t dissolve and promotes the movement of material through your digestive system.

Pear, cauliflower and banana are excellent sources of fibre, and a ripe pear contains a lot of juice, so don’t add more liquids to this recipe (unless your pear isn’t as ripe yet) to keep your smoothie deliciously creamy. Frozen cauliflower doesn’t add flavour, but apart from being a good source of insoluble fibre we’ve added it as it enhances the creaminess and is an excellent source of vitamin C. Together with the vitamin C found in pear and banana this single smoothie gives you an healthy vitamin C shot, and delivers important minerals too that support your immune system.

The honey is optional, and if you’re not a sweet tooth, leave it out. The pear makes it sweet and you may find it gets too sweet. Blend without first, taste and add honey you prefer it a little sweeter.

Pear Smoothie

  • ½ C Yoghurt (we used homemade probiotic yoghurt, but you can use any plain yoghurt)
  • 3-4 florets frozen cauliflower
  • ½ frozen banana
  • 1 large pear (fresh, quartered & cored)
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 3 walnut halves
  • 1-2 tsp honey (optional)

Add all ingredients except the honey to your OmniBlend jug and blend for about 30 seconds on high. Taste, and add honey (or dates or maple syrup) if you prefer it sweeter. Give it another whizz and serve immediately, or bring on the go.
